STUDENT BIOGRAPHIES

Nima Golzy

I've been with Students for a Safer Southside since its inception in late 2005 and have learned a great deal about Berkeley's communities, problems, restaurants, politics, and activism. In particular, I work on the survey and policy aspect of what we do, along with a few tag-alongs to football games for observations. This group has given me a background in public health and local policy-making, but also importantly it has given me something to do other than Chemistry. Though I fancy myself a future quantum theorist, I also enjoy concerts, driving long distances, and symmetryrtemmys.

Shai Horovitz

Hi! My name is Shai and I'm a second year majoring in Public Health and Near Eastern Studies. I will be working on the survey portion of APN.

Erica Wilhelmsen

I am a 3rd year Public Health major. I learned about Alcohol Policy Network and Students for a Safer Southside through the Berkeley student-run program called Health Service Internship. My main focus at APN is policy concerning social hosts and responsible beverage service. I also coordinates tailgate observations. In my free time, I enjoy karaoke, dance parties, and cooking.

Nalini Padmanabhan

I am in my fourth year at UC Berkeley, double majoring in Psychology and Molecular/Cell Biology. I particularly enjoy the media and policy aspects of working with the Alcohol Policy Network and Students for a Safer Southside, and plan to be involved with the media campaign project. I hope to attend graduate school in the near future and earn a Master's Degree in Health Communication.

Michelle Jiang

I am a senior at UC Berkeley, majoring in Public Health. I always have been interested in working with public health based organization- which is why I started getting involved in Safer Southside. Through the one semester and more- I have had the opportunity to learn more about policy making, marketing, and more about public health.

Nicole Flores

I am currently in Students for a Safer Southside because I am interning with the Alcohol Policy Network. My internship is one component of the Health Service Internship program. My projects for Students for a Safer Southside include working on both the community and student surveys, helping out with the media campaign when needed, and doing other ongoing projects.

Caitlin Schorr

I am a fourth year Molecular and Cellular Biology major, with an emphasis in Neurobiology. As a pre-med student, I am concerned with public health issues surrounding students at U.C. Berkeley. I understand the negative affects of binge drinking, and hope to decrease the prevalence of alcohol related problems. I plan on working on the media campaign, policy writing, and doing observations.

Janielle Sazon

I am a 4th year Sociology major. I am involved with Students for a Safer Southside because I want to make a difference in the Berkeley community. I realize that binge drinking is a growing problem, especially on college campuses. For this reason, I want students to know that they do not have to drink excessively, yet alone; drink at all, in order to fit in.

I am currently in charge of organizing bar observations. We conduct observations on various bars surrounding the UC Berkeley campus to see how well the establishments follow Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) standards. RBS training educates individuals about California laws that surround serving alcohol, the penalties that follow if laws are violated, and various strategies that servers may follow to create a safe and legal drinking environment. We also observe the drinking behaviors of various bar patrons. With the information we gather from these bar observations, it allows us to better understand what kinds of forces drive students to drink. Moreover, these observations give us the knowledge needed to create policies that would better enforce drinking behaviors.

Sankar Sridaran

I am a third year Molecular Environmental Biology major. I am currently working with APN and Safer Southside as an intern under the Health and Medical Apprenticeship Program at UC Berkeley. My interest is primarily in Environmental Health, specifically research and advocacy to promote progressive public health policy.
